INSTRUCTIONS: How to Claim a Network ID

  • Go to https://netid.siu.edu/ to claim the Network ID
  • Click on the link at the bottom of the Login box: "New User? Claim your network ID"

Complete the steps in the "Network ID Account Management Portal":

  • Step 1: Enter your user information:
    • Legal First and Last Name: as provided during the CESL Orientation (Per passport)
    • Date of Birth: as provided during the CESL Orientation
      (Example: January 7, 1998 = 01/07/1998)
    • DawgTag: as provided during the CESL Orientation (No "SIU" in front of number)
  • Step 2: ACCEPT terms of use
  • Step 3: Activate your Duo device
    • Click on "Start setup"
    • Select "Mobile phone" and then click "Continue"
    • The system needs to verify the number so choose "Text me" and enter the 6-digit code, then click "Verify" and then click "Continue"
    • Search for the DuoMobile application in your App Store and download it in your cell phone. Then, click the "I have a Duo account" to get the barcode to activate the Duo app in your phone.
    • From the drop-down menu, select "Automatically send this device a Duo Push" and then click "Save"
    • Click "Continue to Log in" and you should receive a Duo push text in your mobile phone. On your mobile phone, click "Approve" right away as it will time out.
  • Step 4: You will see your Network ID on the screen ("SIU85..."). The network ID is the same number as your DawgTag but it has the letters "SIU" in front. Write it down in a safe place. Click "Next."
  • Step 5: Secret questions: Choose five security questions and answers that are easy to remeber. You will need to know the answers to the questions if you need to reset your password in the future. Click the "SHOW ANSWERS" button at the bottom of the page to be able to see your answers as you type them. Click the "Submit" button.
  • Step 6: Update Personal Information: Either type the cell phone number OR email—DO NOT USE BOTH!
Click "Submit" and the system will send a text or email message with a validation code.
    • Enter the validation code and click "VALIDATE"
    • Then click "Submit" and then click "CLOSE"
  • Step 7: Password: Follow the requirements to create a new password. The 2 main rquirements are:
    • 16 digits long (or longer)
    • Include one of these symbols: { } + [ ] ! - _ ~ ? .
    • Type your password and click "Reset Password"
    • You can save your login information in your device now.

Write down your password in a safe place. Forgetting a password is the most common reason for network issues for CESL students.

Log in to your SIU Network account

SalukiNet

In order to use your D2L account and SIU email from now on, please follow the instructions below:

  • SIU email: Go to SalukiNet at https://salukinet.siu.edu and click on the "SIU Email, Office 365" box. Use your network ID ("SIU85...") and new password to log in to your new email account. Please send a test email to cesl@siu.edu
  • D2L account: This is SIU's online class management software. You will need it to access class assignments, grades, and more. It will not be ready until the next day but please show the students where the icon is in SalukiNet and explain that D2L is our online learning platform (announcements, homework, grades, etc.).
  • Emergency text alerts: This is not required but it is recommended. Go to https://siu.edu/emergency/ to receive text notification about bad weather (snow storms, hurricanes, etc.), campus closures, and other emergency notifications.

Changing Your Password

If you need or want to change your SIU network password or your contact information, you need to visit https://netid.siu.edu/ and enter your network ID ("SIU85..."). Then click on "Forgot your password?" to answer the security questions or receive a PIN# to unlock your account by email or text. Resetting your password is also a good option if your account was locked due to inactivity or many failed login attempts.

TROUBLESHOOTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR OFFICE STAFF HELPING WITH ORIENTATION:

  • If the student gets an error message more than twice, please help before the account gets locked due to too many failed attempts. If it gets locked, the CESL staff member should initiate a speaker call with SalukiTech and ask them to unlock the account. If the issue is not a locked account, Lili or Rhonda will check Banner or work with SIS to resolve other issues.
  • When setting up the user name and password, students should be aware if they are using UPPERCASE or lowercase letters. Also, make sure they know how to use special characters (Example: "@" is not located in the same place on all countries' keyboards). Typing the information incorrectly is the #1 issue during the technology information stage.
  • Also, please make sure students have a way to remember their user name and password, as they will be required to know this login information when using their D2L accounts, SIU network accounts, and SIU email. They often forget it!
