Since 1966, the Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU) has been a successful intensive English program with a well-established international reputation. You will benefit from small class sizes and individualized attention in a beautiful natural environment.

Students can study on an individual basis in CESL's language labs or sign up for our Conversation Partners Program

You can enjoy a beautiful forest and lake on campus. You can also take advantage of outdoor hiking, boating, camping, sporting events, and building relationships with the friendly people of Southern Illinois.

CESL is near a 270,000 acre national forest and several fishing and boating lakes. The city of Carbondale was named ‘The Best Small City in Illinois’ by Life in America’s Small Cities. People enjoy a low cost of living, and it is easy to get to major American cities like St. Louis, Chicago, Indianapolis, Memphis and Nashville.
