The Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) is the third oldest certified intensive English program in the USA. Since 1966, our intensive English language program has been open to prospective university students, professionals, and others who want to learn English as a second language in an immersion and intensive community.
CESL is a unit of the Department of Linguistics at SIUC and it is staffed by faculty members that have areas of expertise (MA or PhD) that support ESL learning. As a U.S. Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified school, our Designated School Officials (DSO) are able to issue the I-20 form needed for an international student needing to apply for a student visa.
CESL students can easily join SIUC after completing their language training. SIUC is a large public university with over 15,000 students. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching ranks SIU among the top 5 percent of all U.S. higher education institutions due to SIU's high research activity.
In addition to excellent education, another advantage of studying at CESL is the central location of the CESL classrooms, right between Morris Library and the Student Center. Being at the heart of campus allows CESL students to immerse themselves on campus life.
We hope that you will join CESL, a successful intensive English program with well-established international reputation, excellent faculty and quality of education, and located at the heart of the SIUC campus.
