Catherine Caldwell

Catherine Caldwell received her B.A. in Social Welfare from San Diego State University and M.A. in EFL from SIUC. She has 20 years of teaching experience at CESL. Her research areas include materials development, course design, and all aspects of teacher training. She has presented workshops at regional and international conferences and is the author of two articles in TESOL's New Ways series and one book review. She was nominated in 2005 for TESOL's Teaching Excellence Award. She conducted teacher-training sessions in Chile in 2006 for the Ministry of Education and the Fulbright Commission.

Cheryl Ernst, Ph.D

Cheryl Ernst earned her Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University and her MA-TESOL from Northern Arizona University. She has over 15 years teaching experience in programs in Finland, Japan, and at several US institutions including Harvard University, The University of Findlay, the University of Delaware, and the University of Alaska Anchorage. She is professionally active giving presentations, submitting articles, and serving on professional committees at the local and international levels. She conducted teacher training sessions in Santiago, Chile for the MInistry of Education and the Fulbright Commission and Tokushima University in Japan. She presented a guest lecture at National Cheng Kung University in Tainan City, Taiwan as part of her long-term workshops for the Elite Students. She is a professional language trainer for business managers and executives. Her professional areas of interest include teacher training, working with the International Teaching Assistant population and in academic English. Her hobbies include playing violin with the Southern Illinois Symphony (way in the back!!!), astronomy with the local astronomy club, hiking locally, and traveling.

Thomas Gault

Thomas Gault joined the CESL staff in August of 2010, previously living and working in California, as well as Taiwan and Hong Kong. He holds a BA in communication arts from Geneva College, an MA in theatre from California State University, Fullerton, and a PhD in education from the University of Southern California. (Go Trojans!) In his doctoral program he studied language acquisition under David Eskey and Stephen Krashen, and his dissertation examined Hispanic immigrants' assumptions regarding good teaching in ESL. Thomas has presented at numerous conferences on such topics as "How to save your vocal chords" and "How hidden is your agenda?" He is interested in doing further research on student assumptions, natural language theory, and vocabulary assessment. Thomas's hobbies include watching TV, not exercising, and eating junk

Patricia Krejcik

Patricia Krejcik has a B.A. equivalent in translation and interpretation (English-Brazilian Portuguese- English) from Associação Alumni in São Paulo, Brazil. She also has an M.A. in TESOL from Northern Arizona University. She has taught EFL and ESL for 17 years in Brazil, Turkey, and the United States. Patricia’s areas of interests include curriculum, course, and materials development, assessment, and ITA training.

Stacie Lawley

Stacie Lawley earned her MA-TESOL from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana and her BS in Plant and Soil Science here at Southern Illinois University. She has taught for more than thirty years, both here in the states and abroad in Korea, and Mexico. She was a participant in the Fulbright Seminars Abroad program in Pakistan, and spent two years in Sierra Leone, West Africa as a Peace Corps Volunteer. Stacie has presented at TESOL conferences at both the state and regional level. Her research interests include second language reading and writing.

He has over 20 years experience as an ESL instructor, has lived and worked in Korea, and is the author of several articles and book reviews.

Susan G. McFalls received her B.S. degree in Speech Education and her M.A. degree in English as a Foreign Language, both from Southern Illinois University. She has over thirty-five years of teaching experience in intensive language programs and was the Director of Curriculum at both ELS at Eckerd College and CELL at Maryville College. She has also presented workshops at state, regional and national TESOL conventions.

Kathryn Mutchnick holds an M.A. in TESL from Kent State University and a B.A. in Spanish and Latin American Studies from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She has taught and tutored ESL and EFL in the United States and in Mexico in both the ESL and IEP settings. Her areas of interest include second language acquisition in the areas of communication and writing.

William Phelps received a B.A. in English and Latin American Studies from Augustana College (IL) and an M.A. in Applied Linguistics/TESOL from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Bill has taught or tutored ESL/EFL since 1996 in a variety of settings including (but not limited to) high schools, two-year colleges, vocational colleges, universities, and adult education programs. Bill’s professional interests include Composition Theory and Second Language Writing, Bilingualism, and CALL. Bill enjoys cooking, baking, and hiking. However, his true passion is baseball, and the Chicago Cubs are his team. Bill does not dance.

Patrick T. Randolph holds an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with a concentration in syntax theory, conversation analysis, and second language acquisition. He also holds an M.A. in Philosophy from UW-Madison with a concentration in ancient philosophy, the rationalists, and Heideggarian thought. He received his B.A. in Philosophy and Spanish Language and Literature with a minor in Psychology from Beloit College. Randolph has published five books: Why Verbs? A Reference Book of 200 English Verbs; The Strange Foreigner Times Collected 1994-1999; Father's Philosophy, Empty Shoes: Poems on the Hungry and the Homeless and Father's Philosophy - Second Edition. He has presented papers and given workshops at local, regional, and international education and TESOL conferences. Randolph has published poems in numerous journals and published articles on poetry and creative writing in the ESL classroom, games and grammar, ways to prevent plagiarism, hints for peer review and peer editing, ethnomethodology, and using philosophy in writing classes. His interests include creative writing for ELLs, conversation analysis, vocabulary acquisition and pedagogy, tri-part phrasal verbs, Turkish language, film and culture, the Favre era in the NFL, and enjoying time with his family.

Colin Robinson

Colin Robinson is finishing a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He holds an MA in Foreign Languages and Literatures (Spanish) and an MA in Linguistics, both from SIUC. He has a BA in Political Science from UC Riverside. His interests are bilingual children, heritage languages, grammar, and teacher mentoring. He has published and presented at multiple professional ESL and foreign language conferences. Robinson has taught at CESL full-time since 2005.

Kamden Summers

Kamden Summers received her B.A. in Psychology and Ancient Literatures and Languages from Monmouth College, IL and her M.A. in Applied Linguistics and English from SIUC. She is currently working on her PhD in Linguistic Anthropology at SIUC with a specialization in Celtic languages. She served in the United States Army for eight years and worked for the federal government for several years before deciding that teaching was her chosen direction. Her professional interests include English for academic purposes and doing her best to prepare students for the responsibilities of further educational work or jobs that require intensive use of English. In her spare time, Kamden loves to read novels, study different languages from around the world, and spend time with her family.

Sarah Chang

Sarah joined the CESL faculty in August of 2011, after teaching at Southeast Missouri State University's Intensive English Program. She also has taught ESL at the University of Delaware and taught at CESL both as a Teaching Assistant and an adjunct instructor during and after her graduate studies. She earned both of her Master degrees from SIU, with one in Workforce Education and Development, and the other in TESOL. She lived and worked in Okinawa Japan for 3 years while serving in the United States Air Force. Her academic interests include teacher training and mentoring, pronunciation correction, and teaching her students the academic skills they must have in order to be successful college students. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter, traveling, cooking and eating foods from around the world, and hanging out with her friends from different countries. She also collects anything Hello Kitty and looks forward to traveling to Taiwan once a year to visit her husband's family.

Lesa Bruner received her B.S. in Management at Southern Illinois University. After being a stay at home mom for many years, she decided to go back to work. Eventually, she joined the CESL family where she enjoys doing a variety of jobs.

Joy Carter, Office Systems Specialist, and is involved with the CESL admissions process. Ms. Carter attended Manhattanville College in New York where she majored in Russian and the University of Pittsburgh where she received her B.A. in Elementary Education. She has over 20 years of service with CESL.

Laura Chromzack

Laura Chromzack is one of the International Student Advisors for CESL students. She will be working with the students enrolled in the General English levels and Advanced English 1. Laura has been working in the CESL office as support staff since December 2008. While at CESL she has assisted students with personal, intercultural and academic issues and is a member of the Student Services Advisory Committee. Ms. Chromzack has a B.A. in International Studies and has studied various languages for her own enjoyment. Before joining the CESL team, Ms. Chromzack worked with international students and visitors through the Iowa Council for International Understanding and through Academic Year in the United States.

Leah McSorley is the International Student Advisor for CESL students in Advanced English 2 classes and above. Leah has worked with international students for six years in many cities including Madison, Wisconsin and Lake Charles, Louisiana. Ms. McSorley advises CESL students on academic, immigration, and cultural issues. In addition to advising, she creates intercultural training and programming for the department. Ms. McSorley has a B.A. in Intercultural Communication and Spanish from Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin and an M.A. degree in Intercultural Education and Training from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities which she finished in 2010. Prior to coming to CESL, she worked as an international student advisor, a study abroad student advisor, and an admissions counselor.

Melody Meadows is an Account Technician II and works with the financial side of CESL. Melody has been employed at SIU for 23 years and currently works 50% at CESL and 50% at the Paul Simon Policy Institute. In her free time, she likes to crochet, read and watch movies.

Jane Meuth, Administrative Aide, received her B.S., M.S. and PhD degrees in Workforce Education and Development from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Jane has been with the Southern Illinois University system for over 20 years. She previously served in a clerical capacity for an Illinois Minority Graduate Fellowship Program for 8 years and as Administrator for 9 years.
